UPI fraud in India: what to do and how to get money back

A collect request you approved, a QR code you scanned or a 'refund' that took money out instead. Here is how UPI scams work and the exact dispute route to follow.

Quick answer

Yes, UPI fraud money can sometimes be recovered, but speed decides it. Call 1930 at once so the receiving account can be frozen, raise a dispute inside your UPI app and with your bank, and file on cybercrime.gov.in. If the bank does not resolve it, escalate to NPCI's dispute channel and then the RBI Ombudsman.

Key takeaways

  • You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN request always means money leaving.
  • Report within minutes: 1930 first, then a dispute in your UPI app and with your bank.
  • Your bank is the first door; NPCI and the RBI Ombudsman are escalation routes.
  • If you authorised the payment yourself, refunds usually depend on freezing the fraudster's account.
  • Fake 'customer care' numbers found on search engines are a leading cause of UPI losses.

Can UPI fraud money be recovered?

Often, yes, but only part of it, and only if you act fast. UPI moves money in seconds, and fraudsters usually move it again within minutes, through a chain of "mule" accounts. Every minute you save before reporting improves the odds that some of the money is still sitting in an account that can be frozen.

There are two separate recovery tracks, and you should run both at the same time:

  • The banking track: a UPI dispute raised through your UPI app and your bank. This is where wrong debits, failed transactions and unauthorised payments are handled, and it can escalate to NPCI and the RBI Ombudsman.
  • The police track: a call to 1930 and a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. This is what gets the receiving accounts frozen. Our general guide to reporting cyber fraud explains the portal and complaint tracking in detail; this page focuses on what is special about UPI.

One honest point: if you yourself entered your PIN to approve a payment, the bank will usually treat it as an authorised transaction. Your money then comes back mainly through the police track, when frozen funds are released to victims.

What are the common types of UPI fraud in India?

Almost every UPI scam relies on one misunderstanding: that you need to do something to receive money. You do not. Receiving money on UPI needs nothing from you except sharing your UPI ID or number.

ScamHow it worksThe giveaway
Collect-request fraudA "buyer" or "refund desk" sends a payment request that looks like money coming to youThe app asks for your UPI PIN
QR code fraudYou are told to scan a QR code to "receive" an advance or refundScanning a QR always pays someone; it never credits you
Fake refund or cashbackA caller claims an overpayment or failed refund and walks you through screensPressure, screen-sharing requests, "just enter PIN to confirm"
Fake customer careYou search for a helpline and call a number planted by fraudstersThey ask you to install a screen-sharing app or share an OTP
"Wrong transfer" requestSomeone sends a small amount, then begs you to return a larger oneCheck your actual bank balance, not their screenshot
Look-alike UPI handlesA UPI ID mimics a shop, utility or government bodyThe name shown before payment does not match exactly

OLX-style marketplace scams often use the collect-request and QR tricks; see our guide to online shopping and OLX fraud for the buyer-seller side of it.

What should you do in the first hour after a UPI scam?

  1. Call 1930 (or file on cybercrime.gov.in if the line is busy). Give the UTR or transaction reference number, the amount, time and the UPI ID that received the money.
  2. Raise a dispute inside your UPI app. Most apps have a "Help" or "Raise complaint" option next to the transaction. Choose the reason that fits, such as fraud or unauthorised transaction, and note the complaint ID.
  3. Call your bank's official number (from the back of your card or the bank's own website, never a search result). Ask them to log a fraud complaint against the UTR and to block UPI on your account if your PIN or phone is compromised.
  4. Change your UPI PIN and, if you installed any screen-sharing or "support" app on the caller's instruction, uninstall it and check that nothing else was added.
  5. Save evidence: screenshots of the transaction, the chat or call log, the fraudster's number and UPI ID, and the SMS from your bank. Do not delete the conversation.

The UTR number is the single most useful detail. It lets the bank, NPCI and the police follow exactly where the money went next.

How does the UPI dispute and refund process work?

UPI complaints follow a ladder. You start at the bottom and move up only if the step below fails or does not reply in time.

  1. Your UPI app (third-party app or bank app): the complaint you raise in the app is passed to the bank or payment service provider involved.
  2. Your bank: as the bank that holds your account, it remains responsible for handling the complaint even if you used a third-party app. Ask for a written reply or reference number.
  3. NPCI: NPCI's website has a UPI dispute redressal section where you can lodge a complaint if the bank and app do not resolve it. NPCI operates the UPI network; it does not hold your money, but it can push the issue with member banks.
  4. RBI Ombudsman: if the bank rejects your complaint, does not reply within the period allowed, or you are unhappy with the reply, you can complain under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme through cms.rbi.org.in.

For technical failures, such as money debited but not credited to the receiver, RBI has a turnaround-time framework that requires automatic reversal within set timelines and compensation for delay. Fraud is different: here the bank investigates, and how much it refunds depends on whether the payment was authorised by you and how quickly you reported.

Will the bank refund a UPI payment I made myself?

This is where many victims feel let down, so it helps to understand the rules. RBI's customer-liability framework for electronic banking says that when a fraud happens because of a lapse by the bank, or through a third-party breach that the customer reports promptly, the customer should bear no loss. When the loss is due to the customer's own negligence, such as sharing a PIN or OTP, the customer bears the loss until it is reported, and the bank must protect the account from then on.

RBI has issued updated directions on this framework for commercial banks that take effect for transactions from 1 January 2027, adding stronger alerts, reporting channels and timelines. Ask your bank which version applies to your transaction date and request its written board-approved customer-protection policy, which banks must make public.

The practical takeaway: a payment you approved with your own PIN is usually treated as customer-authorised. That does not mean the money is gone. It means recovery will mostly come from the police freezing the receiving accounts, which is why the 1930 call matters so much. How do you check if a UPI ID is fraud or not?

No public database confirms that a UPI ID is safe, but a few habits prevent most losses:

  • Read the registered name that the app shows before you pay. If you are paying "City Electricity Board" and the name shows a person, stop.
  • Be suspicious of new or odd handles that copy brand names with extra numbers or letters.
  • Pay merchants by scanning their own QR at the counter, not one sent on WhatsApp.
  • Report suspicious numbers and messages on Sanchar Saathi's Chakshu facility, even if you did not lose money.
  • Check marketplace sellers before advancing money; our guide on investment and task scams covers the "pay a small amount first" pattern used in many UPI frauds.

What happens after the fraudster's account is frozen?

When police act on your 1930 or portal complaint, banks can place a hold on the amount that reached the fraudster's accounts. Getting that held money back to you is a separate, slower step. Depending on the state and the amount, it may be released on a police request or may need an order from a magistrate on your application. Keep your acknowledgement number and the bank's hold confirmation together.

Sometimes the receiving account belongs to an ordinary person whose account was rented or misused. If your own account has been frozen because fraud money passed through it, read what to do when a bank account is frozen by cyber crime.

Can a private detective help in a UPI fraud case?

Banking records and account holder details can be obtained only by police and banks through legal process, so no private detective can lawfully "trace" a UPI ID's KYC data for you. What a professional can lawfully do is organise your evidence into a clear timeline for the police complaint, check open-source information on a fake business or seller, and help in larger cases, such as a fraudulent company or a known person who has duped several people. A verified professional through Hire Your Detective can advise whether your case is one where that work is useful.

Bottom line

Remember one rule: a UPI PIN is only ever needed to send money. If you are a victim, call 1930 immediately, raise a dispute in the app and with your bank using the UTR number, escalate to NPCI and the RBI Ombudsman if needed, and keep every screenshot. Speed, not luck, decides most recoveries.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

UPI fraud complaint kaise kare?

Turant 1930 par call karein ya cybercrime.gov.in par complaint darj karein. Saath hi apne UPI app mein transaction ke saamne "Raise complaint" chuniye aur bank ke official number par fraud report kijiye. UTR number, screenshot aur fraudster ka UPI ID sambhal kar rakhein.

Is there a time limit to raise a UPI dispute?

Report as soon as you notice the transaction. Delay weakens both the bank's investigation and the chance of freezing the money. Banks and apps may have their own windows for raising disputes, so check your app's help section, but never wait to see if the money comes back on its own.

Can I get money back if I sent it to the wrong UPI ID by mistake?

A mistaken transfer to a real person is not fraud. Raise a complaint in your app and with your bank; the bank can contact the receiving bank, but it usually cannot reverse the payment without the receiver's consent. If the receiver refuses, a legal claim for recovery may be needed.

Does NPCI refund money directly to victims?

No. NPCI runs the UPI network and handles disputes between member banks, but any refund is credited by your bank. Use NPCI's dispute redressal channel when your bank and UPI app fail to resolve the complaint, and keep your bank's reference number ready.

Is it safe to accept a payment request from an unknown person on UPI?

No. A collect request is a request for you to pay. Decline any request you did not expect, even if it says "refund", "cashback" or "prize". Genuine refunds arrive in your account automatically without any action or PIN from you.
